Crying as a Superpower

It’s been raining all week, and when I see and hear the rain, I feel like the earth is crying and grieving. Yet those grieving raindrops don’t go to waste, they nourish the earth, the plants, the grass, and the animals, which also nourish us.

The devastation we are seeing in our world, hopefully, is waking many of us up to the inner healing the earth is calling us to. We are not separate from each other or from nature.

I’m someone who cries. I cry when I’m happy. I cry when I’m sad. I cry when so much joy fills my whole body, and I cry when the pain feels too heavy for my heart.

Now that I’m older, I see those tears as a superpower. To really experience the fullness of life, to be truly in our bodies, we have to allow ourselves to feel and to cry. To cry, to feel, is a normal human experience. Life is hard. And those tears connect us to each other with empathy and compassion.

Crying and grieving, and yet with each raindrop, and with each tear, we’re reminded that love, beauty, and life still surround us. Even when we think there is no hope, nature shows us there is death, and then there is life. It’s never just what it appears to be. We can’t only focus on what we see with our physical eyes. There is always something getting ready to give birth to something new, even when we are in the dark, when everything feels dreary, grey, and the sun is hidden from us. Some of the most beautiful things are created in the dark.

And I love how my dog knows when I ache. She cuddles up close to my heart, offering comfort and unconditional love.

Just like the rain outside and my dog’s heart beating on my chest, reminding me it’s okay to take a break, to feel, to cry, and to remember that those tears nourish my body, just like rain nourishes the grass, the trees, and everything in between.
